At Kansas City Laser-Like Lipo®, we get asked a lot about Phentermine by our weight loss patients; do we recommend using it or staying away from it. Of course, we tell our patients to follow the advice of their prescribing doctor. We know that losing weight can be a real challenge, especially if you have tried different diets and exercise routines without success. Fortunately, there are medications like Phentermine that can be beneficial to patients, but is it effective and are the risks that Phentermine poses worth it? In this blog post, we will explore what Phentermine is, how it works, and the risks associated with its use.
Phentermine is a prescription medication that belongs to a class of drugs called sympathomimetic amines. It is used as an appetite suppressant to help people lose weight. The drug works by stimulating the release of neurotransmitters in the brain that control hunger and satiety. This reduces food intake and leads to weight loss.
Phentermine is typically prescribed for short-term use (up to 12 weeks) in conjunction with diet and exercise. And this is key, diet and exercise needs to be incorporated into the patient's lifestyle. Phentermine is not designed to be used with an unhealthy lifestyle and a lack of activity, and its not meant to be used as a long-term solution for weight loss.
There are several benefits associated with using Phentermine for weight loss:
The main benefit of using Phentermine for weight loss is appetite suppression. By reducing your hunger cravings, you’ll find it easier to stick to your diet plan and consume fewer calories overall.
Phentermine also has stimulant effects on the body which can lead to increased energy levels. This means you may feel more motivated to exercise, which can further enhance your weight loss efforts.
Many people who take Phentermine report rapid weight loss during the first few weeks of treatment. This initial boost in weight loss can provide motivation to continue with healthy habits such as dieting and exercising.
While there are benefits associated with using Phentermine for weight loss, there are also risks that should be considered before starting treatment:
Phentermine has been classified as a controlled substance due to its potential for abuse and addiction. As such, it should only be used under close medical supervision.
Common side effects associated with Phentermine use include dry mouth, headache, nausea/vomiting, constipation/diarrhea, restlessness/insomnia, dizziness/lightheadedness or changes in sex drive/impotence.
More serious side effects may include chest pain or discomfort; decreased ability to exercise; fainting; swelling of feet or lower legs; trouble breathing; unusual tiredness or weakness; vision changes.
Phentermine may interact negatively with other medications such as antidepressants or blood pressure medications. Therefore it's important that anyone considering taking phertermine consults their doctor before starting any new medication regimen.
As previously mentioned above phertermine should only be used as a short-term solution (up to 12 weeks) in conjunction with diet and exercise.
At Kansas City Laser-Like Lipo®, we prioritize the health and safety of our patients. While we understand the potential benefits of using Phentermine for weight loss, we strongly encourage our patients to visit with their primary care physician about the potential risks associated with its use. We believe that staying away from prescription weight loss medications is a better long-term solution for sustainable weight loss. Instead, we offer some of the highest quality nutritional products available and promote natural methods such as diet and exercise to achieve lasting results. Our goal is to help our patients achieve optimal health and wellness in a safe and effective manner without compromising their overall well-being.
