At Kansas City Laser-Like Lipo®, we get asked all of the time on what we recommend that our patients eat for a healthy meal plan. There is so much confusion amongst individuals due to the vast amount of fad diets that are on the market. However, one of the best ways that we have found for people to lose weight and keep the weight off long term is the 80/20 Rule for weight loss.


The 80/20 Rule: The Secret To Sustainable Weight Loss


Losing weight can be hard. Keeping it off can be even harder. It's no wonder that so many people struggle with their weight and turn to fad diets, extreme exercise regimens, or even surgery in an attempt to shed the pounds.


But what if there was a better way? What if you could lose weight in a way that was sustainable, healthy, and didn't require you to give up your favorite foods or spend hours at the gym every day? At Kansas City Laser-Like Lipo®, we have always recommended that our patients look at choosing their food choices through a very particular lens that is easy to follow and understand:


Enter the 80/20 Rule for weight loss. This simple but powerful concept has been gaining popularity in recent years as more and more people realize that crash diets and extreme measures are not the answer.


In this article, we'll explore what the 80/20 Rule is, why it works, and how you can implement it in your own life to achieve long-term weight loss success.


What is the 80/20 Rule?


The 80/20 Rule (also known as the Pareto Principle) is a concept that originated in economics but has since been applied to many other areas of life, including productivity, time management, and yes – even weight loss.


At its core, the 80/20 Rule states that roughly 80% of effects come from 20% of causes. In other words, a small number of factors are responsible for a large portion of the results we see.


When it comes to weight loss, this means that you don't have to be perfect all the time. Instead of striving for perfection (which is impossible), focus on making good choices most of the time.


The idea behind the 80/20 rule is that if you can make healthy choices about 80% of the time (such as eating nutritious whole foods and getting regular exercise), then you can indulge in less healthy choices about 20% of the time (such as enjoying a slice of cake at a birthday party or having a burger and fries at your favorite restaurant).


Why Does It Work?


So why does this approach work? There are several reasons:


It's Sustainable


One of the biggest problems with crash diets, fad diets, or extreme exercise regimens is that they're not sustainable over the long term. Sure, you might be able to follow them for a few weeks or months, but eventually you'll get burned out or bored – and then what?


The beauty of the 80/20 rule is that it's designed to be sustainable over the long term. By allowing yourself some flexibility and room for indulgence, you're much more likely to stick with healthy habits over time.


It Reduces Cravings


When we tell ourselves that we can never have certain foods again (like pizza or ice cream), it only makes us want them more. This can lead to intense cravings and binge eating episodes – neither of which are conducive to sustainable weight loss.


By allowing yourself some indulgences within reason (remember – just about 20% of the time), you're less likely to feel deprived and therefore less likely to experience intense cravings.


It Promotes Balance


Another problem with extreme diets or exercise regimens is that they often take an all-or-nothing approach. You're either "on" or "off" – there's no middle ground.


The problem with this approach is that it doesn't promote balance in your life. You may end up feeling like you're missing out on social events because you're afraid there won't be anything healthy for you to eat there. Or maybe you skip workouts because you don't have enough time for an hour-long gym session every day.


The 80/20 rule promotes balance by allowing room for both healthy choices and indulgences. This means that you don't have to miss out on social events or skip workouts altogether – just aim for healthy choices most of the time.


How Can You Implement It?


Now that we've established why the 80/20 Rule works so well for weight loss, let's talk about how you can implement it in your own life:


Start Small


If you're used to strict dieting or rigid exercise routines, jumping straight into an 80/20 lifestyle might feel overwhelming at first. Instead, start small by making one healthy choice per day – such as choosing water instead of soda with lunch or taking a short walk after dinner.


Once those habits become second nature, add another healthy habit until they become part of your routine.


Be Mindful


When it comes to indulging in less-healthy options about 20% of the time, mindfulness is key. Ask yourself: do I really want this piece of cake right now? Is it worth sacrificing my progress toward my goals?


Sometimes indulging will be worth it; other times it won't be. Being mindful about your choices will help ensure that those indulgences stay within reason.
